The hard way es la tercera pista y el cuarto avance del disco Unwanted de Pale Waves (2022).
Cuenta la "batalla con la pérdida y la lucha por la aceptación que conlleva" de la líder Heather Baron-Gracie. "Cuando estaba en la escuela secundaria, una niña que estaba siendo intimidada se quitó la vida", comentó. "Me subía al autobús con ella todas las mañanas y la veía sentada en el mismo lugar. Ella se sentó abajo y yo subía. 'The hard way' trata sobre mi arrepentimiento por no ayudarla o defenderla, que siento ahora como adulta". Agregó: "De niño eres muy tímido y temeroso, pero espero que influya en las personas para que defiendan a quienes necesitan ayuda y ayude a las personas a comprender que sus palabras y acciones pueden ser realmente dañinas. No sabes lo cruel que puedes ser a veces, especialmente a esa edad".
