The Shel Talmy recordings de David Bowie recopila canciones que el productor del título —conocido por su trabajo con The Who y The Kinks— grabó con el artista en 1965, cuando este aún se hacía llamar Davie Jones. Entre los 22 temas se incluyen diez canciones y maquetas inéditas, así como colaboraciones con Jimmy Page y el pianista Nicky Hopkins.
Además de sus grabaciones en solitario como Davie Jones, 'The Shel Talmy recordings' incluye temas que Bowie grabó con dos bandas distintas: The Manish Boys —grupo con el que Talmy fichó a Bowie a finales de 1964— y Davie Jones & The Lower Third, banda a la que se unió poco después. Talmy y Bowie grabaron principalmente en los estudios IBC, situados en Portland Place (Londres). A finales de 1965, Davie Jones había comenzado a grabar bajo el nombre de David Bowie.
