Plastic Ono Band - The Ultimate Collection

Antes de grabar su himno pacifista Give peace a chance en la cama del Hotel Queen Elizabeth en Montreal el 31 de mayo de 1969, John Lennon y Yoko Ono ensayaron una primera versión de la canción en el hotel Sheraton Oceanus en las Bahamas unos días antes, el 25 de mayo. Esta actuación, que grabó el cámara de Lennon Nick Knowland y el ingeniero de sonido Mike Lax, nunca había salido a la luz y es la primera grabación conocida de la canción que se conoce.

El metraje, meticulosamente restaurado y que se puede ver en 5K (aquí) gracias a John Lennon Estate, muestra a John improvisando letras de los versos antes de que Yoko se le una en ese coro que se convirtió en un himno antiguerra para una generación y que sigue siendo una canción protesta más de 50 años más tarde.

Originalmente preparado para sucediera en Nueva York, este segundo Bed-In se llevó a las Bahamas después de que a John y Yoko se les denegara la entrada en los Estados Unidos debido a una pena por cannabis de John en 1968. A pesar de ello, debido a la situación del hotel y al increíble calor de Bahamas, la pareja voló a Toronto al día siguiente y al final se instalaron en Montreal, elegida por estar cerca de Nueva York y de la prensa americana, lo que esperaban usar para llamar la atención del presidente Nixon.

La pareja se mudó a la suite de un hotel durante una semana, donde permitieron acceso ilimitado y dieron interminables entrevistas, para que su ya extendida luna de miel sirviera como un “anuncio de paz”. El evento terminó con la grabación del primer single de John en solitario y el primero acreditado a la Plastic Ono Band, “Give Peace A Chance”.

Rodeados de fans, Hare Krishnas y habiendo pasado la semana con un conjunto de amigos importantes y celebridades como el defensor del LSD Timothy Leary, la cantante Petula Clark, el disc jockey Murray The K, el activista de derechos civiles y cómico Dick Gregory y el también cómico Tommy Smothers, que le acompañó con la guitarra acústica, John y Yoko interpretaron la canción en la cama en pijama y ayudaron a crear la banda sonora para una revolución.

Publicado justo un mes más tarde, en julio de 1969, acompañado por el “Remember Love” de Yoko, grabado la misma noche, cuando todos los invitados se habían marchado, el single alcanzó el número 2 de las listas de singles de Inglaterra y el número 14 en EEUU en el Billboard Hot 100, dando a John su primer éxito fuera de The Beatles. A pesar de estar acreditada a Lennon-McCartney, John, más tarde, reveló que la canción la habían compuesto él y Yoko y que ella debería haber recibido el crédito como co-autora.

John dijo que uno de los momentos de su vida de los que se sintió más orgulloso fue cuando Peter Seeger consiguió que una multitud de casi medio millón de protestantes cantaran “Give Peace A Chance” durante 10 minutos en la moratoria de Vietnam en Washington DC el 15 de noviembre de 1969.
