Según Gary Lightbody, cantante principal y compositor, "'Don't give in' era originalmente sobre un amigo pasando por un momento difícil, pero cuanto más escribía en él me di cuenta de que se trataba de mí y la lucha de hacer que el álbum - que tardó 5 años y no fue fácil - junto con la lucha contra la depresión que he tenido desde que era un niño, por lo que se ha convertido en el talismán del álbum. La canción que se convirtió en una profecía autocumplida".
