Escrita por Damon Albarn, 'The hardest thing' comienza con la voz de su colaborador y amigo de toda la vida, el músico y baterista pionero Tony Allen, fallecido en 2020. La canción es una exploración del duelo y la esperanza, ambos temas centrales del disco, con la conmovedora letra: "You know the hardest thing is to say goodbye to someone you love, That is the hardest thing", que se transmite hacia 'Orange county'. En esta canción, Albarn se une a la cantautora y poeta Kara Jackson en la voz, así como a la intérprete de sitar Anoushka Shankar.
